The Challenge

Whether it’s the disparity in unemployment rates, a change in household, or members of our younger skewing population turning 26, the AA community is especially affected by the qualifying life events (QLEs) that open up the Special Enrollment Period. While QLEs affect the entire U.S. population, it’s hard to ignore that certain QLEs are more likely to occur within the AA community. This is only amplified by the fact that African Americans are less likely than the rest of the population to have health insurance to begin with.

Our POV

Life is full of both expected and unexpected moments that can change everything—including your health coverage. And for African Americans especially, the stakes can be that much higher given both the inequities they face in life and in health. But what you do next is often your most important move.

We showed our audience that no matter what life throws at you, making moves to get covered is possible. By highlighting various life-changing moments, we empowered them to take control of their lives and demonstrated that HealthCare.gov is here to help make health insurance the one constant they can count on so they can keep moving forward.
